Surah Ar-Rahman in Arabic together with a simple English meaning, verse by verse.

سورة الرحمن — Surah Ar-Rahman

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.

1. الرَّحْمَٰنُ
The Most Merciful.

2. عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ
He taught the Qur’an.

3. خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ
He created the human being.

4. عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ
And taught him how to speak, understand, and express himself.

5. الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ
The sun and the moon move according to a precise calculation.

6. وَالنَّجْمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدَانِ
The plants and the trees submit to Allah.

7. وَالسَّمَاءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيزَانَ
Allah raised the sky and established balance and justice.

8. أَلَّا تَطْغَوْا فِي الْمِيزَانِ
So do not violate that balance.

9. وَأَقِيمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيزَانَ
Be fair and honest. Do not cheat people or give them less than what is due.

10. وَالْأَرْضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلْأَنَامِ
Allah prepared the earth for His creatures.

11. فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَالنَّخْلُ ذَاتُ الْأَكْمَامِ
On it are fruits and date palms.

12. وَالْحَبُّ ذُو الْعَصْفِ وَالرَّيْحَانُ
And grains, plants, and fragrant vegetation.

13. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

Allah is speaking to humans and jinn, reminding us to recognize His countless blessings.

14. خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ مِن صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِ
He created the human being from dry clay like pottery.

15. وَخَلَقَ الْجَانَّ مِن مَّارِجٍ مِّن نَّارٍ
And He created the jinn from a flame of fire.

16. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

17. رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَرَبُّ الْمَغْرِبَيْنِ
He is Lord of the two places of sunrise and the two places of sunset.

18. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

19. مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ
He allowed two bodies of water to meet.

20. بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا يَبْغِيَانِ
Between them is a boundary established by Allah.

21. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

22. يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُمَا اللُّؤْلُؤُ وَالْمَرْجَانُ
From them come pearls and coral.

23. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

24. وَلَهُ الْجَوَارِ الْمُنشَآتُ فِي الْبَحْرِ كَالْأَعْلَامِ
The great ships sailing across the sea, appearing like mountains, are under His authority.

25. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

26. كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ
Everyone and everything on earth will eventually pass away.

27. وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
But your Lord, full of Majesty and Honor, remains forever.

28. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

29. يَسْأَلُهُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ هُوَ فِي شَأْنٍ
Everyone in the heavens and earth depends on Allah. He is constantly carrying out His will and wisdom.

30. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

31. سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ أَيُّهَ الثَّقَلَانِ
Humans and jinn will certainly be brought to account.

32. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

33. يَا مَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالْإِنسِ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ أَن تَنفُذُوا مِنْ أَقْطَارِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ فَانفُذُوا لَا تَنفُذُونَ إِلَّا بِسُلْطَانٍ
O humans and jinn, if you think you can escape beyond the boundaries of the heavens and earth, try. You cannot do so except with authority and power granted by Allah.

34. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

35. يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِّن نَّارٍ وَنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنتَصِرَانِ
A flame of fire and overwhelming punishment will be sent against those who try to escape, and they will not be able to defend themselves.

36. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

37. فَإِذَا انشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَالدِّهَانِ
When the sky splits apart on the Day of Judgment, it will change dramatically in appearance.

38. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

39. فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُسْأَلُ عَن ذَنبِهِ إِنسٌ وَلَا جَانٌّ
On that Day, the reality of people's sins will be completely known to Allah.

40. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

41. يُعْرَفُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ بِسِيمَاهُمْ فَيُؤْخَذُ بِالنَّوَاصِي وَالْأَقْدَامِ
The guilty will be recognized by their signs and seized in humiliation.

42. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

43. هَٰذِهِ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِي يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا الْمُجْرِمُونَ
They will be told: This is the Hell that the guilty used to deny.

44. يَطُوفُونَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ حَمِيمٍ آنٍ
They will move between the Fire and intensely boiling water.

45. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

Then Allah turns from warning to the beautiful reward of Paradise.

46. وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ جَنَّتَانِ
For the person who feared standing before Allah will be two gardens.

This means someone who remembered that one day they would answer to Allah and therefore tried to stay away from sin.

47. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

48. ذَوَاتَا أَفْنَانٍ
Those gardens will be filled with beautiful branches and abundant growth.

49. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

50. فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ تَجْرِيَانِ
In them will be two flowing springs.

51. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

52. فِيهِمَا مِن كُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ زَوْجَانِ
There will be every kind of fruit in pairs.

53. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

54. مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَىٰ فُرُشٍ بَطَائِنُهَا مِنْ إِسْتَبْرَقٍ وَجَنَى الْجَنَّتَيْنِ دَانٍ
The people of Paradise will recline comfortably on beautiful furnishings, and the fruits of the gardens will be close and easy to reach.

55. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

56. فِيهِنَّ قَاصِرَاتُ الطَّرْفِ لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ إِنسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَانٌّ
There will be pure companions of modest gaze, untouched before them by human or jinn.

57. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

58. كَأَنَّهُنَّ الْيَاقُوتُ وَالْمَرْجَانُ
Their beauty and purity will be like rubies and coral.

59. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

60. هَلْ جَزَاءُ الْإِحْسَانِ إِلَّا الْإِحْسَانُ
Is the reward for goodness anything except goodness?

If someone sincerely believes, obeys Allah, repents, and tries to do good, Allah will not allow that goodness to be wasted.

61. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

62. وَمِن دُونِهِمَا جَنَّتَانِ
And besides those two gardens will be another two gardens.

63. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

64. مُدْهَامَّتَانِ
They will be intensely green and beautiful.

65. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

66. فِيهِمَا عَيْنَانِ نَضَّاخَتَانِ
In them will be two overflowing springs.

67. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

68. فِيهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَنَخْلٌ وَرُمَّانٌ
In them will be fruits, date palms, and pomegranates.

69. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

70. فِيهِنَّ خَيْرَاتٌ حِسَانٌ
There will be goodness and beautiful companions.

71. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

72. حُورٌ مَّقْصُورَاتٌ فِي الْخِيَامِ
There will be pure companions, protected and honored in their dwellings.

73. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

74. لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ إِنسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَانٌّ
No human or jinn will have touched them before.

75. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

76. مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَىٰ رَفْرَفٍ خُضْرٍ وَعَبْقَرِيٍّ حِسَانٍ
The people of Paradise will recline comfortably on beautiful green cushions and fine carpets.

77. فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ
So which of the blessings of your Lord will you both deny?

78. تَبَارَكَ اسْمُ رَبِّكَ ذِي الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
Blessed is the name of your Lord, the Owner of Majesty and Honor.

The main message of Surah Ar-Rahman

Every time we hear:

فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ

we should think:

“O Allah, I cannot deny Your blessings.”

Allah has given us life, food, water, health, the earth, the sky, our ability to think and speak, and most importantly, guidance.

But this world will not last forever.

كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ
Everything on earth will pass away.

وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ
Only Allah, the Lord of Majesty and Honor, remains forever.

So Surah Ar-Rahman teaches us to recognize Allah’s mercy, thank Him for His blessings, live justly, remember the Day of Judgment, turn away from sin, repent to Allah, and hope for His Paradise.

May Allah make us among those who hear:

فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ

and answer with our hearts:

لَا بِشَيْءٍ مِنْ نِعَمِكَ رَبَّنَا نُكَذِّبُ، فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ

“Our Lord, we do not deny any of Your blessings. All praise belongs to You.”
